What does the school division do well in providing for school safety and security?
The school system has a security person at the front desk and in some cases, a school security resource officer. Periodic exercises with the students regarding threats and safety.
What gaps exist regarding school safety and security that need to be addressed?
I think the exterior doors, even at main entrance, should remain locked to outside persons at all times and only allowed in the building once a valid verification/reason for entry is complete. It could be detrimental once a person with ill intent is already in the building, especially when the front security desk is stacked up with people waiting to check in. A person could just walk past the desk without being noticed.
What new resources can be added or what existing resources can be used in different ways to strengthen school safety and security?
Use the existing door locks and voice intercom system at the front of the school to assit in execution of what is suggested in prior question. Also, review more frequently with the students what to do in case of a threat and reiterate not opening doors to the school building for anyone even if they are known to the student.
