The background check system at the front desk for those entering the school is good.

  • What gaps exist regarding school safety and security that need to be addressed?

Bullying in school needs to be addressed more efficiently and with a clear policy. Children found to be defending themselves should not be punished if the that circumstance is proven. Misbehavior in class should be addressed as well. Children that are out of control can quickly become a safety issue in classes that are large in size.

  • What new resources can be added or what existing resources can be used in different ways to strengthen school safety and security?

I feel that it would be safer for the front doors to be locked during school hours. There should be a camera aimed at the area with an intercom, so that the front desk and security could monitor the area. When someone needs to be let in they should have to say their name and state their business before being buzzed in. It's not a foolproof system, but would give time for personnel to at least observe if the person looks or behaves suspiciously before gaining easy entry. I would always insist that all security personnel are armed.
