What does the school division do well in providing for school safety and security?
Schools have done well with limiting access to the building and student population. Increasing levels of ID badging, sign in logs, cameras, radios, upgrading locks and full time staffing of a School Resource Officer are beneficial.
What gaps exist regarding school safety and security that need to be addressed?
The gap, in my opinion, is preventing an intruder, with the intent to harm, from entering the premises
What new resources can be added or what existing resources can be used in different ways to strengthen school safety and security?
The new resource I propose is to use a building material as a direct replacement to glass, in varying levels of the building to prevent intrusion. The building material I would consider is a bullet resistant glass like product, meeting all the glass specifications from the building Engineer and/or Architect. At the exterior and interior curtain walls, Level 3 bullet resistance can be used to replace tempered glass. At each classroom, Level 3 can replace the vision lights in the doors and Level 1 can be applied to the inside of the door and along the walls as a skin. For older buildings and trailers, Level 1, 2 & 3 skins can be applied to the walls, doors and replace operable and fixed glass windows. The value added benefit is all material can be used as dry erase boards. This material is available and used for military application where the cost to a school is often prohibitive. Fortunately, the same material is used as a little known building material at a cost commonly equal to or less than tempered glass. Using a combination of limited access by badging, controlled access by upgraded locks, radios and a SRO... and barrier access to prevent physical entry by an intruder or up to Level 6 ballistic penetration, a facility will truly have a building assembly where intrusion and unconscionable acts of violence can be prevented.
