Other behaviors that research suggests could be separated from grading include oral presentations, class participation, work habits and neatness, effort, class attendance, punctuality of assignments or class behavior/attitude.
None of these should be separate. These are all important aspects of future endeavors including college and career. It is a complete failure to our children to not adequately prepare them to succeed in life.
What other thoughts/concerns do you have regarding recommendation one?
Like it or not grades get the attention of students and parents. as parents and educators we should not continue to lower standards and remove personal
responsibility from our children. This is a mistake that will be devastating and long lasting. I am extremely disappointed that the school board does not believe that our children are capable of being responsible citizens and it appears that falsely inflating grades is more of a priority than truly preparing children for the future.
Below are sample grading scales for review. Next to each scale are calculations of how 3 students (high achieving, mid-achieving & low achieving) would fare academically if 6 of their assignments were graded using that scale. Do you have suggestions of a grading scale for the committee to consider?
No response.
What other thoughts/concerns do you have regarding recommendation two?
I like example one - example 2 and the current scale seem to penalize high achievers while allowing poor students more leniency. The grading scale should be fair for all students.
What other areas of grading inconsistency do you feel are most pressing in our schools? This could include, but is not limited to, the use of retakes/redos on assignments, the weighting of grades, the assignment of extra credit and the acceptance of late work.
This should not be a blanket decision by some committee. These should all be at the teachers discretion.
What other thoughts/concerns do you have regarding recommendation three?
I cannot fathom why this committee wants to water down education and standards. Life should not always be easy and there should be consequences for poor work ethic and reward for strong work. Trust in the teachers to do their job and organize their classroom as they see fit - the constant bureaucracy is not enhancing our children's education.
