Please consider the importance of maintaining the older, existing neighborhood characteristics of the west side. Older neighborhoods with diverse housing - both in style and cost, larger lot sizes with large native trees, interspersed dense patches of native vegetation that function as wildlife habitat and/or corridors, passive water catchment, no streetlights. Why can't new neighborhoods with affordable housing have these characteristics as well? Why can't we require and/or incentivize minimal impact developments in places like this? Why can't the 1 Million Trees Initiative include preserving native patches of desert as well as planting trees in key areas? If the answers always come down to money - now is the time to challenge that short-sighted way of thinking.
