What would you like to see on the Western Canal from 48th Street to the I-10?
Western Canal Design Study- 48th Street to the I-10
In January 2025, the City was awarded a Maricopa Association of Governments Design Assistance grant for the Western Canal Bike and Pedestrian Improvements Project. This preliminary design project explores how to transform the last half mile stretch of unimproved canal path along Western Canal from 48th Street to the completed I-10 pedestrian bridge.
This project will connect to the Phoenix Canalscape at 48th Street to create a seamless east/west canal route across Tempe for active recreation and transportation. Proposed improvements may include a concrete multi-use path, landscaping and lighting on the canal bank. This design project will also include proposed improvements to Wendler Drive to help users navigate to the canal path. This is the second survey for this project and your feedback will help determine what improvements are included in the final design plans. No funding has been identified for final design or construction of this project. To view the first survey results and other project information: tempe.gov/westerncanal
