The City of Tempe currently faces challenges in comprehensively supporting its local business community due to limitations in business data. A proposed General Business License aims to bridge information gaps and enhance city communication with local businesses.
The city is considering a license model that would require businesses with a permanent location in Tempe, including those not required to obtain a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license, such as professional services and contractors with job sites in Tempe, as well as nonprofit entities, to obtain a business license. Exemptions are being considered for businesses with existing regulatory licenses, temporary businesses, special event vendors, and other businesses like casual activities, childcare, independent contractor/sale representative, educational lessons, or tutoring services.
The proposed fee is $25 annually, which aligns with fees charged by other cities in the region.
Timeline for public input and implementation:
April 16-30: Public Comment Period
May 22: First Public Hearing
June 5: Second Public Hearing and Adoption
Aug. 1: General Business License Fee becomes effective
Jan. 1, 2027: General Business License first renewal payment
