Please provide comments on the recommendations related to Papago Preserve.
Papago is a great outdoor space for many residents, we should ensure all recreational activities can have their place and have a proper trail system that has signage and educational opportunities as well.
Trails should be maintained/rehabilitated and heaving replanting efforts need to take place to maintain the Preserve environment.
The Bike jumps are a cherished area for many residents and was installed in what was a ditch initially, they need to be preserved and grandfathered in as it provides great recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The rock-climbing also needs to be retained as various clubs and local climbers consider it their local 'spot'.
In your opinion, what three objectives should the city prioritize first? Please list in order of importance with #1 being the most important.
Develop a recreation trails assessment and formal trails plan
Develop a user education program on environmental, cultural, recreation, and waterrelated topics
Restore and augment disturbed Preserves landscapes and habitats using native plants

Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Consider a broader public outreach and engagement, such as workshops or focus groups, to align the management plan with community values and needs.
Funding and Resource Strategy: Suggest integrating a timeline or roadmap for securing sustainable funding.
Monitoring and Evaluation Metrics: The plan references community surveys but lacks specific ecological and social metrics to track success. Add clear benchmarks for ecological health (e.g., vegetation cover, wildlife populations) and visitor satisfaction (e.g., safety, accessibility).
Additional comments on the overall draft Preserve Management Plan
Tracking success with better Success Metrics:
Include more detailed and quantifiable metrics for success. For instance:
Measure trail maintenance effectiveness (e.g., percentage reduction in erosion or user complaints about trail conditions).
Monitor invasive species eradication (e.g., reduction in buffelgrass and fountain grass coverage over time).
Visitor satisfaction surveys post-implementation for trail and signage improvements.
Prioritize trail Maintenance and Accessibility: especially addressing erosion-prone trails like Leonard Monti Trail.
Create/improve bike-friendly trails, such as incorporating berms and jumps, to support diverse user needs.
Close and revegetate unauthorized "spider trails" to preserve natural habitats and minimize erosion.
Volunteer and Steward Programs: Create a robust Preserve Steward Program with structured roles for community members to assist in trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and education. Also collaborate with local schools, universities, and community groups for volunteer initiatives.
