Tempe Public Art aspires to cultivate a unique community identity that advances Tempe as a vibrant and progressive destination. Tempe’s diverse collection of permanent and temporary public art complements the natural and built environment through innovative placemaking, installations and infrastructure enhancements. Tempe public art promotes artistic expression that brings people together to strengthen Tempe’s sense of community and place.

As the City of Tempe has grown, the Public Art Collection continues to expand to meet community needs. Examples of current public art projects include art in streetscapes, parks, neighborhoods, and community centers throughout Tempe.  A Public Art Plan is crucial to prioritize the creation of artworks within the built environment by providing a set of principles and strategies that can be applied to future programming.

The Public Art Plan will provide guidance on how to strengthen Tempe’s public art network by expanding the experience of public art for residents and visitors. The plan will create a roadmap for how we begin to activate our many communities to implement and enjoy public art while also celebrating Tempe’s unique spirit and creativity. It will also aim to increase economic opportunities for artists and arts organizations. The plan will answer questions such as: What type of public arts programming would you like to see? Is it easy for artists and creators to thrive here? What barriers do people face in accessing public art experiences and how can we reduce them? How does public art funding get distributed throughout Tempe? Thinking through questions like these will help make Tempe’s public art offerings more exciting, representative, and accessible to everyone!
