Should we regulate use of artificial turf in Sunnyvale?
The City is evaluating the use of artificial turf at:
- Private properties, such as homes and businesses, and
- Public areas, such as parks and public fields.
Artificial turf, or synthetic grass, is a surfacing material made of synthetic fibers. It is designed to mimic the appearance and function of natural grass. Natural grass is a plant that can be used as a surface cover and requires soil, sun and water to grow. Both surface covers can be used for various purposes. For example, they are used to cover athletic fields, ornamental ground covering, residential yards, etc. This survey is part of Study Issue ESD 24-01. The Sustainability Commission sponsored it in response to community concerns about the use of artificial turf in public parks and athletic fields.
The study examines the following for both ground cover types:
- Benefits
- Costs
- Environmental impacts
- Health impacts
- Maintenance needs
- Impacts on field availability and use
The end goal of this study is to provide recommendations to City Council on policy related to artificial turf for various use cases.
Your responses to this survey will help the City understand community needs and priorities. This will directly shape the recommendations we provide to the City Council.
To provide in-person feedback, join the community meeting on Feb. 12, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Sunnyvale City Hall.
