What is the eventual plan for the large, temporary-looking asphalt parking lot adjacent to the Smart Financial Center?
Twice I have publicly asked our mayor this question, both in a pre-election meet-and-greet, and recently in a development presentation given to an overflowing crowd at the University Library. Both times I received no real answer -- and at the second event that caused quite a negative reaction from the attending crowd.
It begs the question: Why isn't that parking lot concrete? The Smart Financial Center is certainly meant to last for many decades; why wouldn't its parking lot be made to last, also?
It is well-known that our Planning and Zoning group is bitterly unhappy with putting any restrictions on the number of apartments in the Tract 5 development district -- as far as they're concerned, the more the merrier; the taller the better. The surrounding neighborhood residents hold largely the opposite opinion.
I strongly anticipate that the following scenario will ensue: Sometime in the not-so-distant future, when Tract 5 is finished being populated with hotels, convention centers, shared-use buildings and what-not, that is, when it's "all built-out," someone will conveniently realize that all those cars parking on the thin asphalt at the Smart Financial Center would fit nicely into a multi-story parking garage built right next to the hall, freeing up a HUGE area of land that -- voilà -- is perfectly suited to become the high-density housing site P&Z so transparently lusts for.
That's why the parking lot isn't concrete.
This is the elephant in the room. City Council needs to finally live up to its responsibility to its constituents, and tell us the truth about their plans for this parking area and its future.
Hi, What about new elementary school for Riverstone from FBISD facility master plan discussion? There is only one land available at Avalon at Riverstone. Please use this land to build a new elementary school for Riverstone. Commonwealth Elementary School is at utilization of 138% in Fall 2018 school year. There are total of SIX portables at Commonwealth Elementary School. Two of the additional portables are located in the middle of field and playground. Thank you for your consideration. Thanks you!!
