January 13, 2025, Public Hearing: Variance for Dem-Con HZI BioEnergy, LLC
Dem-Con Hitachi Zosen Inova, now Kanadevia Inova, (DCHZI) BioEnergy, LLC has made an application for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to construct and operate an anerobic digester with gasification and biochar technology. An anerobic digester is a facility and technology that takes in organic materials such as food waste, animal waste, yard/tree waste, and other organic rich materials, and produces renewable natural gas and biochar. The purpose and benefit of an anerobic digester is to divert wastes from landfills and to create renewable energy products. The natural gas product will be delivered into the local commercial gas pipeline and the biochar will be marketed to businesses for additives in their products. Biochar is a carbon-rich charcoal most commonly used as a soil amendment to aid in soil aeriation, improve soil productivity, reduce soil greenhouse gas emissions, as well as in used in water filtration systems and concrete additives.
