Chard Grading & Excavation has requested an Interim Use Permit to mine sand and gravel from approximately 29 acres in the southeast ¼ of Section 5 of Belle Plaine Township. The property is zoned A-3, Agricultural Preservation Density District, which allows mining of sand and gravel resources through an IUP. The 29 acre mine site will include the mine area as well as a processing area, stockpiles, parking and buffer areas. The mine site is part of a 105 acre parcel owned by LeRoy Chard. The 105 acre parcel is used for agricultural crop production. The request is to mine the northern 29 acres of the site. Except for some trees along a fence line, there are no woodlands or wetlands where the mine is proposed. The applicant has stated that the sand &gravel resource runs out to the south, so the mine is not likely to expand beyond the 29 acres requested in this application.
