Sandpoint has experienced significant growth over the past few years. As continued growth is anticipated, planning for it and corresponding future land uses are important to maintain community values and strategically respond to the related challenges and opportunities.
Do you think growth is positively or negatively affecting the City of Sandpoint? Why do you feel this way?
Growth is inevitable. If well planned, we can emphasize the positive aspects of growth and minimize the negative. A growing economy can increase opportunity for all citizens. Social and recreational opportunities can also increase with growth. Planning makes all the difference between diverse, balanced growth and haphazard expansion that can't be sustained. I applaud the resistance to big box stores and drive-through businesses. I think the City has to better plan and fund maintenance of our existing infrastructure - streets, sidewalks, trails, water lines, storm water facilities, and parks. Before we expand, let's figure out how we are going to maintain both the existing and the expanded areas.
What are your primary concerns if Sandpoint continues to grow? Please list up to 5:
Attracting a mono-culture that values money over our environment, social equality, and community service.
Allowing motor vehicle traffic to cut our community into seperate neighborhoods that are inaccessible except by MORE motor vehicles
Loosing our small-town security. I dread an increase or development of crime on all levels - from shoplifting to domestic violence & drug/gang murders
What can the City do to mitigate your concerns about growth?
Attract businesses and employees by providing such a desirable place to live they can't resist paying a little more to be here.
What are the potential benefits of Sandpoint continuing to grow? Please list up to 5:
Increased economic opportunities - diverse jobs that pay a living wage
Increased education opportunities - Technical or other post-secondary school
Increased social opportunities - beyond alcohol-influenced night-life, such as clubs, groups, and societies.

Please provide other considerations that are important when considering growth should it continue to occur in and around Sandpoint.
The City is already providing services to areas that have not been annexed (Larkhaven & Northwood Meadows). This reduces motivation for areas to be annexed. I am happy to pay for the services I get as a resident of Sandpoint, but I do not want to subsidize the residents of nearby Bonner Co. or neighboring communities. All legal means of motivating adjacent development to be annexed into Sandpoint should be considered.
