We want to hear from you about your priorities for economic development and what you think the City of Sandpoint should focus on in order to grow a more diverse, healthy, and vibrant economy. Your response to the survey will inform the priorities set forth in the Comprehensive Plan Update.
Looking out 20 years, what does a healthy and vibrant economy in Sandpoint look like to you? Be specific.
I hope to see opportunity for all ages of adult to make a living. I hope to see the next generation of job style, like remote work and emerging career types, fully supported and encouraged. I think we could use more co-working spaces. Incentives and benefits for individuals like myself who write for a living, needing no set workspace. We should look forward to new ways of working and not wistfully at a lost lumber industry.
Through initial outreach during the Fall, we asked the community to start thinking about what they love about Sandpoint and to reflect on the values articulated in the existing 2009 Comprehensive Plan. Of the following, what are the top 3 that are most important for you?
Leverage Sandpoint’s quality-of-life amenities to attract and retain businesses
Embrace innovation and technology
Upgrade and expand tech infrastructure such as high speed internet
What should Sandpoint be doing to help support these shared values?
Sandpoint is located in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. First and foremost, we look to enhance and work with that natural beauty. Secondly, we should aggressively implement technology that allows us all of the same benefits of living in a large city - internet, diverse foods, fresh produce, social opportunities.
Economic Diversity Goal: Create a vibrant and diverse economy in Sandpoint. Please rate the importance of each of the following policies. (1=not important, 5=very important)?
Support existing manufacturing businesses as providers of jobs with living wage and benefits. - 3
Encourage localism and innovative techniques to increase circulating dollars within the Sandpoint economy. - 5
Attract industries that provide jobs for graduates of higher educational programs and vocational-technical schools. - 4
Encourage the development of clean technologies. - 5
Encourage arts and environmental related employment. - 5
Please comment about the economic diversity goal and policies. Are there any policies that you feel are missing from the list above?
I see a future in Sandpoint where art and literature are supported in a way that most places cannot. Attract creatives and intellectuals, and we will be able to solve the rest of our problems as they come. Sandpoint is not in the right location to support manufacturing of heavy, low-cost parts. Aerospace and tech are a much better direction. Let China make the cheap cookie-cutter stuff.
Neighboring Communities Goal: Join with neighboring communities to strengthen the regional economy. Please rate the importance of each of the following policies. (1=not important, 5=very important)?
Be an active partner with local economic development agencies. - 5
Improve transportation corridors to facilitate movement of goods into, out of, and through the region. - 3
Improve transportation facilities and services to facilitate movement of people through the region. - 5
Coordinate land use decisions with surrounding communities to limit commuting distance and redundant infrastructure. - 4
Please comment about the neighboring communities goal and policies. Are there any policies that you feel are missing from the list above?
Reach out to surrounding communities and work toward common goals. Develop signature design aspects (like the blue accent lighting I see) and help propagate that look in the surrounding area for a unified theme. Travelers should know when they are near Sandpoint, and be glad they are there.
Workforce Needs Goal: Provide Sandpoint workers with affordable housing options near jobs, public transportation, and non-motorized transportation options. Please rate the importance of each of the following policies. (1=not important, 5=very important)?
Encourage diversity of housing types as appropriate in land use districts. - 4
Help reduce household transportation costs by allowing housing near jobs. - 4
Facilitate public transportation and/or non-motorized transportation connections between jobs and neighborhoods. - 2
Promote opportunities that employ Sandpoint residents in Sandpoint. - 5
Please comment about the workforce needs goal and policies. Are there any policies that you feel are missing from the list above?
Local opportunities are a great idea. Walking in a town like Sandpoint is a six-moth per year proposition. Don't forget about the cars. They have heated seats, and that is a big deal in winter.
Downtown Revitalization: Support downtown Sandpoint’s historic role as a major economic, social, and civic center of Bonner County. (1=not important, 5=very important)?
Focus economic development resources primarily on priority projects. Focus on solving specific problems. - 4
Encourage residential uses on the second story and above. - 5
Collaborate with local business organizations and assist in providing the infrastructure to attract new economically diverse business in the Downtown. - 5
Create a streetscape that encourages an active street life. - 5
Make downtown a primary multimodal friendly destination. - 5
Regularly update the Downtown Revitalization Plan. - 5
Encourage preservation of historic buildings. - 5
Retain high traffic downtown anchors. - 2
Encourage first floor restaurants and diverse retail utilization. - 5
Please comment about the downtown revitalization goal and policies. Are there any policies that you feel are missing from the list above?
I feel that our downtown area is best served as a center for arts and culture with diverse retail, plentiful food and drink venues, and live entertainment. It is not the right place to force a micro Trader Joes or other anchor-type store to exist. Local-owned, local-operated businesses do best here.

Sandpoint has changed a lot in the 13 years I've lived here. With the rise of Ponderay as big-box central, Sandpoint is becoming the upscale botique area. We need to look at the next phase as well, as Amazon continues to gobble up market share. Creatives thrive in a place like this. We need to encourage and facilitate them.
