On Thursday, August 20, 2020, the Provo City Council will be considering the adoption of a resolution on the importance of face coverings and possible legislation requiring the use of face masks as a means to limit or prevent personal exposure to the COVID-19 contagion.
Provo's public schools opened this week and college students are now arriving in Provo from around the nation to attend Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University (BYU). A recent joint meeting with the Provo City School District included a discussion on the precautions happening in the schools and concerns on whether the overall community in Provo was taking enough precautions to prevent a major outbreak.
At the August 18 Provo City Council work meeting, BYU shared a study on school reopenings and stated, "Safe reopenings cannot be achieved by interventions at school alone. In-school protective measures must be implemented along with family actions and community support to lower student, teacher, and community infection rates."
Another BYU study about the effectiveness of masks regarding the spread of COVID-19 stated, "Researchers from hospitals, universities, the private sector, and government agencies have concluded that masks could be one of the most powerful and cost-effective tools to stop COVID-19 and accelerate the economic recovery."
