What do you think of these seven applicants to represent the Provost Neighborhood on the Neighborhood District 2 Executive Board?
Please let us know your opinion of the following applicants for the term beginning January 2025 (you may also submit your opinion privately by emailing the City Council at [email protected]):
Tony Tan
- Provo: Provo resident, owns property in Provo, works in Provo.
- Reason for Applying: My family have specifically chosen to be in Provo. We don't have family ties here, I work remotely, and we did not grow up here. Despite all of that I am very proud to call Provo home. I want to make it a better place for my family and neighbors. Having lived in other parts of the West I can provide insights on what I've seen work and not work in other neighborhoods. I want to represent our neighborhood in matters of the city.
- Goals: I would like to give more people a forum to be heard. I think the loudest voices do not speak for the majority. Most of my neighbors understand very little about their local government and I want to be a conduit to help them feel connected. Because local government is affects them far more than they realize and most decisions are made without their input. I want people to feel empowered that they have a voice and help them see how they can contribute.
Angie Carter
- Provo: Provo resident, owns property in Provo.
- Reason for Applying: I love my Southeast Provo community. I love the beauty of this area nestled against the mountains. I want this area to have more access to that beauty through trails and parks. I also see problems in our neighborhoods that need to be addressed—the high number of rental properties, increasing property values that are pricing people out of Provo, and parking problems. I want to work to solve these problems so that Provo is a beautiful place to live and work wherever someone is within the city.
- Goals: I want to make forward progress on getting the Slate Canyon Park built within the next three years. Our community has been waiting too long for that park while other areas of the city, who also need parks but have been waiting less time, already have parks—and are now getting improvements to those parks while Slate Canyon Park continues to be in planning. I want to help clean up the illegal duplexes in the area. I want to find solutions to parking on Slate Canyon.
Jeanelle Carden
- Provo: Provo resident.
- Reason for Applying: I am fairly new to Provo (2 years) and a first time home owner. In my previous community I was very active in local government and saw the gap in information/ communication that exists between residents and local government officials. I would love to become educated on what is happening at the local government level and share it with my neighbors. I really believe communicating this information, information that has a direct impact on them, is critical to creating a better community.
-
Goals:
- Communication - examine current channels of communication, the good and areas of improvement; seek to bridge any gaps that may exist. Also as a key part of this would be listening. Creating a means of collecting ideas, concerns, etc.
- Build community - everyone wants to feel like they are part of a community. Looking for ways to do this in my neighborhood.
- Represent and faciliate - Get educated on the issues, concerns, hopes, desired outcomes from multiple perspectives and facilitate conversation.
Camrie Christensen
- Provo: Provo resident, works in Provo, owns property in Provo.
- Reason for Applying: It can be a challenge to stay up-to-date and involved in the political agenda. I would represent my neighbors. I want to hear from them and be a voice for them. Recently, our neighborhood has had initiatives imposed without many of my neighbors having a voice or even knowing that it was happening. I want to be able to give feedback from our neighborhood to the local government to ensure that the voice of the people is not only heard but respected and listened to. I love Provo and love to serve.
- Goals: Community involvement is my number one goal. Provo residents need to know what’s being proposed in their neighborhoods. For this reason, my number one goal would be to improve awareness and communication between the two parties. The citizens of Provo should have a greater say in what’s happening in their neighborhood. I would relay their messages and be their voice with the city. I would ensure no project moves forward without the approval of the Provo residents it directly impacts.
Natalie Walker Whitlock
- Provo: Provo resident, owns property in Provo, works in Provo.
- Reason for Applying: I am so impressed with the concept of Neighborhood Districts and the ideals they stand for! I think the Neighborhoods have done a great job in the past, but I'm especially enthusiastic for what the new changes mean, and what theycan be in the future. For many who live here, Provo is the safe, comfortable hometown they grew up in. But for others of us, Provo is the hometown we CHOSE. I chose Provo and I am invested. I would love to help my neighbors engage with their community and their town.
Gregory Soper
- Provo: Provo resident, owns property in Provo.
- Reason for Applying: I want to understand the unique needs of my neighborhood and help better meet those needs. My career in software design has given me experience in clear communication, graphic design, and designing functional processes to help people participate in bigger systems. I'd like to apply those same skills to serve my neighbors.
- Goals: I'd like to create more spaces and opportunities for neighbors to meet, connect, and support one another. I want our neighborhood to be one where we know when our neighbors get sick or need help. Our kids know each other and play together multiple times a week. We are regularly going on walks and calling our neighbors by name. We are organizing ourselves to shovel the driveways and sidewalks of elderly members of our community.
Hannah Petersen
- Provo: Provo resident.
- Reason for Applying: I think it's important to be involved and serve your community.
- Goals: I would like to use our budget for a neighborhood social this summer. Encourage better attendance. Communicate community concerns with staff. This new program allows members to address staff and receive responses easily. I would like to promote this in my area.
- Experience: Former Provo City Water Department employee, current Neighborhood District 2 Executive Board Member representing the Provost Neighborhood, previous Provost Neighborhood Chair / Vice Chair, former Southeast Area Committe Member (helped prepare the Southeast Area Plan).
About the program: The Neighborhood District Program provides public participation and involvement in Provo City affairs and facilitates communication between the Provo City Council and the public. The Neighborhood District 2 Executive Board is made up of two representatives from each of these neighborhoods: Oak Hills, Wasatch, Foothills, Provost, Provost South, and Spring Creek.
