The Provo city zoning laws are horrible. It doesn't make sense that a 5,000 square foot home should only be rentable to 3 unrelated people. There should be some sort of variance application on a per case basis where zoning officers determine what should be the justifiable amount of people living in a specific unit. What is the purpose of this rule? To protect renters? To preserve Provo neighborhoods? There can be connect between all these goals and still being able to rent out a home to more than 3 unrelated people if it is the adequate size. I am currently a student at BYU and have lived in homes with 12 people just because it was zoned 50 years ago. There are current living situations that are very poor that the city approves of legally, but a newer nicer home with good living situations isn't allowed. How can this be fair?
