Police and Fire Staff typically make more money than the majority of City of Berkeley employees. Furthermore, due to the nature of their training, most of them don't carry the burden of large student loan dept. Don't Fire staff already live in City housing 3 to 4 days per week in the Firehouse? The City shouldn't sponsor a program that only benefits a small portion of City staff that are actually doing alright compared to majority of the City's employees. The agenda item is also misleading because in the event of a disaster, only a small number of employees (Department Heads and Division Managers) must report to work and there's no required time frame. So if someone is coming from San Leandro or El Cerrito rather than South Berkeley or the Berkeley Hills is inconsequential. A better approach would be to legalize the Missing Middle Housing types and increase density and height limits near the BART stations and along the major corridors-those actions would have the biggest impact and cost the City $0.
