Please share your thoughts on the New Leicester Highway Sidewalk Project
The New Leicester Highway Sidewalk Project proposes to build 2.3 miles of sidewalk along the north side
of New Leicester Highway (N.C. 63) from Patton Avenue (U.S. 23/74) to the City limit at 396 New Leicester Highway.
The purpose of the project is to improve pedestrian safety and mobility along New Leicester Highway. The project budget
is $3.27 million, which includes the cost of design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation and construction.
The project will include construction of a 6-foot-wide sidewalk, along with concrete pads for bus stops in several locations. Crosswalks will be added across all intersecting streets with American With Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps. In addition, ADA-compliant ramps and pedestrian signals will be added at two intersections with existing traffic signals: Eliada Home Road and Old County Home Road.
The City expects to advertise a request for construction bids in late fall/winter 2019. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2020 and last about a year.
Before we begin construction, City staff would like to hear any suggestions or concerns from area residents. A public meeting about the project was held Aug. 6. For those who were unable to attend, we are sharing the project information here, and this opportunity for online input.
