Please share your feedback on the Thomas Wolfe Cabin site concept plans.

In January 2019, the Thomas Wolfe Cabin Master Plan was commissioned by the City of Asheville, in partnership with the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County.
The overall goal of the project is to create a long-term master plan to guide the restoration of the City-owned Thomas Wolfe Cabin, including its surrounding 44-acre site, which is part of Azalea Park. The Thomas Wolfe Cabin was designated a Local Historic Landmark in 1983.

The City and Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County desired
a master plan that:

• Preserves the cabin;
• Provides for public access and enjoyment of the site; and
• Incorporates appropriate uses that help to make it sustainable and more widely appreciated for its cultural significance.

The planning team met with interested residents in February to discuss
Thomas Wolfe’s legacy in Asheville and the many ideas and opportunities that
the Wolfe Cabin site has to offer. The team compiled the ideas and conducted
their own site analysis over a three-day visit.  Working with the project Advisory
Committee, the team agreed the cabin shall be restored and the site used in a way that reinforces three guiding principles:

• The site will be focused on writers and writing.
• The site will serve as a retreat, in addition to the general public access.
• The site will serve educational purposes.

The team then developed ideas for how to organize the site based on the desired program of uses and on the site’s physical characteristics including the natural environment, accessibility, relationship to surrounding properties, and historic character and ambience. The result was the development of the following two alternatives.

Now the City of Asheville is seeking feedback on the two alternative site plans. Your input will taken into consideration as this project progresses. You can keep up with the project at this informational webpage.
