Large natural area with wildflower meadows and pollinator habitat. The park needs milkweed to support monarch butterfly reproduction, because population of these attractive butterflies are rapidly falling. Minimal amount of mowed grass, which does not support wildlife. More trees. No new pavement or paved trails. Retain all existing trees. Park should be entirely devoted to passive recreation. No active recreational facilities such as ballfields, playgrounds, etc.
Comments
Arlington has too many parks that lack extensive natural areas, including meadow habitats. As a result, the County is losing its native bird and insect populations, including monarch butterflies. To stop this continuing loss, the County needs to develop new meadows and other natural habitat. In contrast, the County (including the area near Nellie Custis Park) has many playing fields, playgrounds, tot lots, dog parks, etc. The County's parks also have too much mowed grass and too many paved plazas and walkways. These are overdeveloped and are not helping to preserve and protect the natural environment.
Nelly Custis Park presently has a tot playground. This needs to be removed, as others are present in nearby parks. The County must take positive action to restore its lost natural areas, even if it needs to remove playgrounds, etc., in County parks that are near other parks with similar facilities.
Open Arlington is not a certified voting system or ballot box. As with any public comment process, participation in Open Arlington is voluntary. The responses in this record are not necessarily representative of the whole population, nor do they reflect the opinions of any government agency or elected officials.
