When you think about a new Lubber Run Community Center, what do you envision yourself doing there?
I would love to see a nice open multi-purpose center with a stage. I am hoping that when the community center is completed, the community will be able to take free classes and participate in free workshops and volunteer activities. My son participated in the free summer drop in programs and many of the activities I am involved in are free or low cost. I normally will not participate in paid activities as my budget is tight yet I love to participate in community activities. I do not qualify nor do I want to apply for sliding scale etc.
Do you or members of your household currently participate in activities at the Lubber Run Community Center?
Yes
If yes, approximately how often do you or members of your household visit the Lubber Run Community Center?
One time per month
What types of spaces and uses should the new Lubber Run Community Center have?
I am taking Quecha classes every Friday evening to enrich my brain activities. These classes are offered to nearby community members. My memory has improved a lot since I begin these classes.
In the past, the apartment communities and the housing communities shared "Community Dinner" where potluck dinners were held and experts were brought in to talk about current events. I miss that. Happened about 15 years ago.
When you think about the immediate area surrounding a new Lubber Run Community Center, what type of spaces and uses should be accommodated on the site?
Being a single mom, I enjoyed taking my son to the Amphitheatre for free events and sometimes would watch the dance groups rehearse in the parking lots. I also miss the dances. They were also free. So if there were a place to rehearse for these groups that would be nice. They pay so much $$ for the costumes they can't not afford practice space so making it free for them in exchange for the community to watch.
In what ways can a new Lubber Run Community Center have an impact on the community?
Lubber Run is special in that it is surrounded by very wealthy neighbors and very low income neighbors. Given the right staff, you could have activities that could bring all neighbors together to work on projects together. Also a great time to bring back, Arlington Police Citizens Academy, CERT, Neighborhood Safety Academy, TOPS,Va. Cooperative Extension Nutrition and Money Mgmt classes.
Do you have a favorite community center in Arlington? If so, which center and why is it your favorite?
I liked the old Arlington Mill Community Center as most programs were community oriented and free. We attended Thanksgiving Dinners, Asian New Years Shows, Talent Shows, and other cultural events. Now there are programs there, but they are not free and not as community oriented as before. I really like the staff who work there. They are very friendly.
