When you think about a new Lubber Run Community Center, what do you envision yourself doing there?
I see myself doing many ordinary activities like voting and picking up leaf/yard bags in spring and fall. But also, attending neighborhood civic association meetings and easily accessible community meetings/events in the heart of Arlington. And walking down into the adjacent park via a thoughtfully constructed path that flows from the beautifully designed multi-flexi room that has wonderful windows to bring trees and sky into the space where I will be doing yoga/tai chi/ dance sessions. (And the design will make all those events very special indeed.)
Do you or members of your household currently participate in activities at the Lubber Run Community Center?
Yes
If yes, approximately how often do you or members of your household visit the Lubber Run Community Center?
Few times per year
What types of spaces and uses should the new Lubber Run Community Center have?
This renovation provides an amazing opportunity to have the planners/consultants assess the surrounding neighborhoods and integrate the important existing uses with the new needs created by the ever-changing dynamics of the area. While LRCC's immediate neighbors are single-family homes and newly constructed mid-rise apartments, the Community Center is within an easy walk of Ballston's urban expansion. Going 'out on a limb" here, I think many urbanites want the chance to see the Lubber Run stream flowing over rocks while walking their dogs in a sniff-worthy park and to watch leaves appear in spring and change color in fall. Conveniently, the surrounding neighborhoods need exactly the same elements. The seniors in affordable housing at Culpepper Gardens and the children at Barrett ES will all profit from a LRCC that incorporates green space and park access while providing the outdoor/indoor flexible space which keeps them in touch nature. The other major element in the neighborhood is Lubber Run Amphitheater. Wouldn't it be wonderful if performing arts groups in Arlington had practice/classroom/office space within the CC? Imagine the synergy.
When you think about the immediate area surrounding a new Lubber Run Community Center, what type of spaces and uses should be accommodated on the site?
This is an opportunity to preserve and enhance informal and outdoor space. Existing elements like the beloved horizontal tree should be preserved and additional simple gifts such as more picnic tables could be included. If an expanded multi-sports field (which would profit Barrett) is in the mix it could be done as an elevated "bridge" over N. Park between the CC and the ES.
In what ways can a new Lubber Run Community Center have an impact on the community?
LRCC will continue to have an positive impact on the community by enhancing activities that LRCC already provides while exploring new ways of using this vital community space to give central Arlington residents access to a carefully designed CC where they can bump into each other and say "Wow! Look at that squirrel up there in the oak tree" or "best yoga session ever" or "these kids do great art projects!"
Do you have a favorite community center in Arlington? If so, which center and why is it your favorite?
Walter Reed is good at providing an indoor/outdoor balance which brings the best of both to the adjacent community.
