When you think about a new Lubber Run Community Center, what do you envision yourself doing there?
I see the new community center as a gathering place for the community, with meeting facilities and County programs and classes. I would definitely take part in senior programs and related recreational activities.
Do you or members of your household currently participate in activities at the Lubber Run Community Center?
Yes
If yes, approximately how often do you or members of your household visit the Lubber Run Community Center?
Few times per year
What types of spaces and uses should the new Lubber Run Community Center have?
Flexible spaces able to accommodate a wide range of activities. I would like to see games (table tennis, billiards), adult education, nature and health programs. Wi-fi would be a plus. Coordination with Barrett school programs is essential. But LRCC should be focused on the immediate neighborhood, and not be a high-traffic, County-wide facility.
When you think about the immediate area surrounding a new Lubber Run Community Center, what type of spaces and uses should be accommodated on the site?
Informal basketball and volleyball, much like what is now there, and a playground is obviously needed. It would be great if it served as a gateway to Lubber Run Park proper, with a nature trail descending to the Park, rather than sidewalk access along G. Mason or N. 3rd St. A Bikeshare station would be nice, as well as a few shared cars (electric, with charging station?). But if late-evening programs, noise-producing outdoor activities, or lighted outdoor sports facilities are planned, it is essential that noise/light/traffic buffers be created to minimize disruption to the surrounding residential area (i.e., no spillover street parking issues, site access from G. Mason Dr. and Park Dr. only, extensive landscaping).
In what ways can a new Lubber Run Community Center have an impact on the community?
LRCC environs include a multi-cultural population, and a wide range of housing types, including much affordable housing. The new center would provide an opportunity for interaction.
Do you have a favorite community center in Arlington? If so, which center and why is it your favorite?
Walter Reed is a nicely-scaled facility.
What is your home zip code?
22203
