When you think about a new Lubber Run Community Center, what do you envision yourself doing there?
I look forward to taking classes, meeting up with friends and having community meetings there- as well as renting space for special occasions. Being able to enjoy views of the park from inside the center.
Do you or members of your household currently participate in activities at the Lubber Run Community Center?
Yes
If yes, approximately how often do you or members of your household visit the Lubber Run Community Center?
One time per month
What types of spaces and uses should the new Lubber Run Community Center have?
There should be all the functions it now houses, with less office space but the ability to use flex spaces for functions such as camp registration, vaccination/screening programs and other occasions, parties for the surrounding communities in a lovely room that could open to a deck looking into the park, that could even be rented too. It should have an expanded preschool, after school program, meeting rooms, exercise room, a not too big gym, rooms that work for yoga classes kids' classes ,computer room, activity room for teens, places where people can gather to chat, have coffee- sort of like a student union on a college campus. A place that would encourage interactions between people. A display area, for bringing info about nature to inform the population about the park that this facility will act as a gateway to would be a terrific way to educate Arlington residents to be stewards of their precious natural resources. Art work exhibit space if not some studio space for artists to work or take classes. And space for musical practice would be lovely to have more crossover with the amphitheater.(Perhaps if there is an amphitheater rain out, depending on the performance scheduled, it could move to a multipurpose gathering space at LRCC)
When you think about the immediate area surrounding a new Lubber Run Community Center, what type of spaces and uses should be accommodated on the site?
Outdoor activity space for all ages, not a formal field as the rolling landscape is a gem of natural land that is well used and loved, from the sideways tree to the trees along George Mason and of course the ancient flowering cherries along Park Drive. Keeping the covered small pavilion is also a terrific asset and a better playground. Our kids played there from Barrett, as the school has no land, and as part of the community and having that space is critical for kids especially in this area where there is already a huge increase in density and a a huge loss of green space. The parking lot is vital to keep as well, especially as Barrett has to use it too, and it provides an excellent spot for learning bike riding, throwing a baseball, etc. when there are fewer cars. The building should still follow step-down development guidelines and not be a huge structure looming over or right up against the town houses or single family homes that boarder it. The area is already 'walled in' with the new townhouses and the massive Madison.
In what ways can a new Lubber Run Community Center have an impact on the community?
It would bring people together from the various communities surrounding it, it always has and could do that even more. The activities will help people age in place as well as providing kids with more options. The preschool and after school programs are both extremely important especially to the lower income residents. The opportunity for outside and indoor unstructured and structured activities is vitally important in a resident dense area that is part of the surrounding community- especially for the the large numbers of lower income residents who have few other options. It is the only walkable community center to many present and future residents of this zipcode.
