When you think about a new Lubber Run Community Center, what do you envision yourself doing there?
I appreciate the park setting of the Center, and I imagine going there to enjoy a work out, attend a class or lecture, or join a neighborhood meeting or event.
Do you or members of your household currently participate in activities at the Lubber Run Community Center?
Yes
If yes, approximately how often do you or members of your household visit the Lubber Run Community Center?
Few times per year
What types of spaces and uses should the new Lubber Run Community Center have?
I would like to see a work out area that probably accommodates a range of ages and abilities. There should be meeting spaces that accommodate smaller groups (up to 30), which could serve as classrooms and lecture rooms, and neighborhood groups (up to 125 or so). I would like to see an area for posting notices from the County, handing out recycling bags, and providing other Community and neighborhood literature. In that area, there might be a limited space with chairs and coffee tables and a vending machine so that neighbors could meet, enjoy a class, and talk.
When you think about the immediate area surrounding a new Lubber Run Community Center, what type of spaces and uses should be accommodated on the site?
I firmly advocate the protection of all green space and would vigorously oppose any encroachment on any park land. There might be a small tot lot outside by the park. I want ample parking to keep cars off the streets--especially important with elementary students in the area--and away from private homes. Parking should permit those with disabilities to park near the Center. I do not want any kind of housing at all in this area. The new town homes have crammed the area, adding traffic and density. Enough's enough. Protect the little green space available. Keep this truly a community center that serves the community, a facility with classrooms and meeting rooms. NO housing.
In what ways can a new Lubber Run Community Center have an impact on the community?
There are few work-out facilities in the area, none if you look for County-run facilities. We are short on classroom and meeting spaces for the community, creating challenges for community groups, civic associations, and social service groups.
Do you have a favorite community center in Arlington? If so, which center and why is it your favorite?
TJ is my favorite. I like the open space and trees next to the building where I can walk, as well and where young children can play. I value the interior space for work outs. There's plenty of space for literature.
