Question: Is the 17.7% target for a sufficient supply of affordable rental housing appropriate?
I am not sure.
Comments (optional):
I believe that this number is far too strong and should be somewhere closer to 8-9% tops with the focus being primarily on the elderly, and handicapped. You cannot design artificial low cost housing it does not work if it is not market derived.
Question: What are your thoughts regarding the approach to the geographic distribution of committed affordable housing?
I agree with the proposed policies, but I would add other considerations (explain below).
Comments (optional):
The market rate proposal seems best and the only plan that would be sustainable due to Arlington County's increasing desirability and avg. household income.
Question: Should Arlington County residents and workers receive a preference for committed affordable housing?
No, I do not support giving preferences.
Comments (optional):
I do not support preferences nor assistance for housing cost unless it is for the elderly, or handicapped. Housing is market based and should not be manipulated for other purposes. There are other housing options outside of Arlington at better prices.
Question: Is it appropriate for this plan to address middle income ownership housing demands?
No, it is not appropriate.
Question: Should we be using public funds for higher-income households?
No, I do not agree.
Question: Would it be more appropriate to address this demand through land use provisions rather than financing?
Yes, that is more appropriate.
Comments (optional)
No response.
Question: Should opportunities for creating greater flexibility of housing types beyond the urban corridors that support both rental and ownership options be further studied?
No, I do not agree they should be further studied.
Comments (optional):
This study needs to take into effect neighborhood impacts such as parking, vehicle traffic, pedestrian traffic, security. If you want that type of environment than District of Colombia or a large heavy urban city would better serve that need.
Additional comments on the Draft Affordable Housing Master Plan & Implementation Framework (optional):
Thank you for your continued outreach to the Arlington Citizens. Unfortunately for some in our wonderful community Arlington is no longer a realistic housing option for their budget and lifestyle. No one is entitled to Housing in the State, City, or neighborhood of their choice. You choose to rent or buy based on price, transportation, schools, lifestyle, etc. Sorry but Arlington is the Wealthiest County in the United States for a second year and the market controls real estate not public policy. To make this easier, you would not go to the gates of Beverly Hills and demand “ I want to live here and you must lower the price so that I can”
Open Arlington is not a certified voting system or ballot box. As with any public comment process, participation in Open Arlington is voluntary. The responses in this record are not necessarily representative of the whole population, nor do they reflect the opinions of any government agency or elected officials.
