Is there anything else you'd like to say about the fees and surcharges associated with Arlington County's gymnastics and aquatics teams?
The amount charged to Arlington residents for participation in competitive gymnastics has been above market for years and we now learn why that is the case - they have been charging excessive fees, against their stated cost recovery objectives. I do hope the County is considering ways to rectify this problem.
Beginning in January, the work group will take stock of the operating model for these teams. Do you have any input you would like to provide on this topic at this time?
I think it is important for the County to continue to support competitive teams like swimming and gymnastics. The gymnasts and swimmers love that they swim for their county and they are proud to represent their home town while at meets across the state. A Memorandum of Understanding would be useful to help clarify DPRs ever evolving/changing policies that make it very difficult for the competitive teams to operate.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The increased demand for gymnastics classes is a result of the highly successful competitive program. Its important to remember that Barcroft was originally designed and built for the purpose of a women's competitive team training facility. Only a small part of the facility was planned to be used for classes. Over the years, the Aerials have given up much of the intended training space for expanded class options and the boys team. The facility is bursting at the seams and cannot handle any new equipment or accommodate additional participants. The residents of Arlington County deserve the opportunity for an expanded program so that more children can benefit from this wildly successful program.
It should also be noted that there are equipment needs for the girls competitive program to continue to be successful. These equipment needs are offered at larger neighboring facilities and have been knows to reduce injuries - such as an in-ground bar (called a "trench" bar) or a rod floor for tumbling. This additional training equipment would reduce the risk of injury while training higher level skills. Unfortunately, there is no room for such equipment given how much of the facility has been made available for the classes and Boys team. As such, this is another reason that the County should accelerate the expansion of the gymnastics program - whether in the facility next door or to another location. No one realizes or appreciates that Aerials training has been compromised over the years and continues to be compromised to accommodate intended space to classes and boy's team. The County should accelerate the expansion to provide the appropriate training space for the teams and the classes and make the opportunities available for all of those that wish to participate.
