What uses would you like to have in the pop-up park located in Clarendon?

Arlington County has the opportunity to create its first temporary pop-up park in the Clarendon-Courthouse area!  The County recently entered into a lease agreement with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea for a vacant portion of their property for a minimum of two years with the option to extend the lease.  The clock is ticking on the two-year lease so we’d like to act quickly to determine what the community would like to see in the space.

Let us know what you think! The Departments of Parks and Recreation and Community Planning, Housing and Development have developed this survey to find out how the community would like to use this new open space.  This is your opportunity to let us know what you’d like to see in the park!

What is a pop-up park?  Pop-up parks are a new concept for creating parks in urban areas where unused lots are converted quickly and inexpensively into inviting public spaces. 

Site Description:

• Located on Clarendon Boulevard, between North Adams Street and North Barton Street, the pop-up park is surrounded by residential, business and office buildings. 
• Size: approximately 12,474 SF or a third of an acre. 
• The park is within a busy auto, bicyclist and pedestrian corridor.

Site Design Notes:

• A portion of the park building materials will be recycled from existing County surplus materials.    
• Improvements to the site will be mostly surface improvements and will be designed to minimize the need for excavation.  This will reduce the cost of construction and allow park elements to be reused at other sites. 

Arlington County is planning to transform the site from a parking lot to a dynamic, inviting and sustainable open space for the community to enjoy! 

Features already planned for the park include:

• ADA accessible paths into and through the site
• A variety of seating options including movable tables, chairs, umbrellas and benches, planter seat walls, etc.
• A drinking fountain
• Small lawn area
• Decorative paving treatments
• Landscaped buffer along the north edge of the site between the public alley and the open space.
• Preservation and protection of existing shade trees
• Additional plantings to enhance the site
• Site drainage improvements

Please review the diagram above to get a better understanding of where the pop-up park will be built.  Keep in mind that improvements for the site are temporary. Therefore, the County will not be considering permanent, expensive design features.  The survey below will be used by the County to gauge what activities, events and park features people are most interested in having in the park.
