Pinellas County is seeking public input regarding four alternatives for the intersection of Belcher Road and State Road 60 (Gulf to Bay Boulevard) in Clearwater.
Based on what you learned from our Project Information meeting or review of the content on pinellascounty.org/belcher60.com, which alternative do you prefer?
Larger intersection
Please describe any concerns you have about the intersection related to safety or traffic flow.
I have lived in Morningside Estates, south of 60 off of Belcher for over 30 years. I can count on one hand the number of "upgrades" this intersections has had.
From the presentation it "sounds like" there will be no interventions or upgrades. It's more of a, go big or go home. With a u-turn more traffic problems will be added to Belcher Rd, especially south of 60 passed Druid Rd. None of that was addressed. Nor was the traffic north on Belcher.
If the left turns are elimated and moved to a right turn, it will be added to the traffic that will be turning right already which will double the number of cars waiting to turn.
Do you have any other comments or questions?
No real interventions to improve the intersection's safety have been tried in numerous years. Here are 5 that can be put in place quickly.
1) Widen and paint the crosswalks with yellow in a brick pattern much like in neighborhoods. 2) Add flashing lights to the pedestrian crosswalk signs. 3) Have an all way red light for pedestrians to cross.
4) Add speed limit signs on 60 approaching the intersection with a digital speed on it, like the ones on Drew St. There is only one sign on 60 and is way down near Home Depot. 5) Change the texture and color of the road several hundred feet leading up to the intersection. Very do able interventions.
Open Pinellas is not a certified voting system or ballot box. As with any public comment process, participation in Open Pinellas is voluntary. The responses in this record are not necessarily representative of the whole population, nor do they reflect the opinions of any government agency or elected officials.
