The City of Palo Alto has initiated a search to hire the next Chief of Police, with the final candidate selection to be made by the City Manager and confirmed by the City Council. The position became vacant following the retirement of Chief Dennis Burns who retired after serving a 35-year law enforcement career with the City. We anticipate the selection process will involve multiple phases with in-depth screening of potential candidates, and a new Chief of Police to be appointed to begin in November. The City is seeking community input to the following questions that will be provided to the executive recruitment firm assisting the City in identifying the key qualities and areas of focus for Palo Alto’s next police chief.
