Help inform the Palo Alto Airport alternatives that will be presented to City Council for their consideration.
The Palo Alto Airport’s Long Range Facilities and Sustainability Plan (LRFSP) is a planning process using guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The LRFSP will result in a blueprint, based on the goals listed below, for long term improvements at the Palo Alto Airport in alignment with City initiatives such as the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan, the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, and annual City Council Priorities.
To date, actions taken to progress the LRFSP include:
- Identification of goals for the Airport
- Inventory of existing conditions
- Aerial survey of the airspace around the airport
- Forecast of aviation demand over the next 20 years
- Determined the FAA recommendations based on the existing critical aircraft
- Environmental survey of airport and surrounding property
- Sustainability charrette conducted in November 2023
- Five (5) public meetings and additional community events where the LRFSP was highlighted
Alternatives were developed in accordance with FAA regulations, taking into consideration City plans such as the 2030 Comprehensive Plan and Sustainability and Climate Action Plan. Past City projects addressing sea level rise, including collaborations with the United States Army Corps of Engineers and Valley Water, were also considered. These alternatives were initially presented at a public meeting held on February 21, 2024 to spark discussions about what may or may not be feasible or desirable from various perspectives. They have since been refined based on community input received during the public meeting. Above the survey is a summary of each refined alternative with the runway and vertiport (an identifiable ground or elevated area used for the takeoff and landing of tiltrotor aircraft and rotorcraft) locations circled in red.
