13. Do you have any suggestions to improve the parking experience in the City of Norfolk?
1. Safety in the garages is an important factor to me. As a downtown residential parker I leave my car in a city garage overnight. I attend the downtown civic league meetings once a month and hear a report from the downtown sector police that includes vandalism incidents. Most of the incidents are in the public garages and the rate is typically highest during the year-end holiday season. I was here when the camera systems were installed years ago and they seemed to help for a while, but apparently they don't have sufficient resolution for identification. Why can't the camera systems be improved? I lock my car, etc., but I'm still concerned about encountering an individual prowling for a target. 2. I'm a biker and I have a secure location downtown to store my bike. But the city is trying to encourage biking. What is the city doing to provide safe, secure storage during the day for biking commuters, and overnight for downtown bikers who don't have room in their apartments or condos for storage? The city garages seem to be ideal--out of the weather, etc., and good cameras could deter thieves. Some cities have even installed bike lockers as added security with key or phone-based lock systems. Some garages have bike racks, but I've often seen bike frames locked to the racks for days with missing wheels, seats, etc. Any hope for bike parking improvements?
