What is Midland Neighbor Week?
It's a week dedicated to getting to know your neighbors! Neighbors are often the first people we meet in our community and are the ones closest to us that can help when we need it, so it's important that we get to know them and build relationships with them.
During the week of September 24 – 30, 2019, Midland residents are encouraged to "stop by and say hi" to their neighbors in an effort to build a more welcoming, connected community. For the second year in a row, we're partnering with the Midland Area Community Foundation's Cultural Awareness Coalition to hold Midland Neighbor Week leading up to Cultural Awareness Month in celebration of the 2019 CAC theme “Inclusive Communication.”
What can I do here?
We've created this topic to give our residents a place online for all things neighboring as we prepare for Midland Neighbor Week. You can post new ideas, comment on others' posts, and access a variety of tools you can use to be a welcoming neighbor all year long.
Have a gathering you're organizing in your neighborhood? Post it below! Need some ideas for ways to "neighbor" this week - and all year round? Check out our suggestion posts! Consider this topic your one-stop shop for sharing ideas and tips you can use to participate in Midland Neighbor Week.
Why are we doing this?
The concept of Midland Neighboring began in 2012 as an initiative within our faith-based community to improve the quality of life in Midland by building a community that cares. In response to the catastrophic flooding event experienced in June 2017, the City of Midland recognized Midland Neighbor Week, a week-long celebration dedicated to getting to know, appreciate, and understand our neighbors. In 2018, Midland Neighbor Week and the Cultural Awareness Coalition of the Midland Area Community Foundation began a partnership to celebrate both this week and Cultural Awareness Month in or around the same time and to develop programming and activities that complement each other.
