Share your suggestions for the 2021 Main Street pedestrian plazas!

If the challenges of 2020 taught us anything, it's how to "do life differently" - and, in some cases, we found that by trying new things, we discovered new success!   

In response to COVID-19 restrictions impacting dining and retail shopping, Downtown Midland created pedestrian plazas by closing two blocks of Main Street to vehicular traffic from June through September 2020.  The pedestrian plazas provided additional space for outdoor shopping and dining and allowed visitors more room to safely physically distance outside. 

If implemented, the overall goals of the pedestrian plazas will remain the same for 2021:  

• To provide more space for businesses who must limit the number of customers inside their business and adhere to physical distancing requirements; 
• To enhance the comfort level of customers returning to shopping and dining activities by providing more room for physical distancing; and
• To assist Downtown Midland businesses in recovering revenues lost due to COVID-19 closures and restrictions by encouraging visitors to safely visit Downtown Midland for shopping, dining and entertainment. 

At the end of the season, the City and the Downtown Development Authority received positive feedback from Downtown visitors and businesses about the pedestrian plazas. At this time, plans are in place to bring these vehicle-free areas back to Main Street in 2021; however, we want to hear from you about your experiences with the 2020 pedestrian plazas to help make this year even better!
