Should Sepulveda Boulevard be renamed Pacific Coast Highway?

The City of Manhattan Beach is considering renaming Sepulveda Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway. As a community member, we want your input on this proposal and encourage you to participate in the City’s survey. This online survey will conclude on September 14, 2018. The City Council will discuss the results of the survey on November 6, 2018, at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers at 1400 Highland Avenue.

Background
In June, 2018, the City of El Segundo, our neighbor to the north, formally changed the name of Sepulveda Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway within its jurisdiction. This is also the name formally used by Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance, our neighbors to the south. Along the roadway segment where Sepulveda Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway are synonymous, only Manhattan Beach and a small segment within the City of Los Angeles refer to the roadway as Sepulveda Blvd. rather than Pacific Coast Highway. 

At the August 7, 2018, meeting, City Council discussed potentially changing the name of Sepulveda Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway. City Council directed staff to move forward with conducting outreach to all affected property/business owners along Sepulveda Boulevard, as required by Caltrans. Additionally, City Council directed staff to place a community survey on the City’s “Open City Hall” forum within the City's website.

Prior to participating in the survey, below are a few facts to be mindful of:

1. The earliest the name change would occur is January, 2019.
2. The post office would provide a transition period of 1½ years (18 months) for the address change to allow for proper notifications to customers, transition of stationary, etc., and planning for other financial considerations. This means it would not be permanently effective before June, 2020. 
3. The City would be responsible for notifying utility companies, websites and other mapping software providers of the changes so that they could be incorporated into future updates.
