  • How should the City of Littleton address its responsibility to the regional housing crisis?

    Littleton has a responsibility to provide a variety of housing options for those who are here and wish to move here within a region that is growing. As people move to the Denver region or current regional residents give birth to future residents Littleton needs to accommodate them. We said through the Comp plan that we would provide over 6000 units. We also said we value inclusivity and diversity. We never said that we wanted to be an exclusive community like Cherry Hills Village and close the doors and not grow. (Btw, communities like Cherry Hills or those like New Canaan or Greenwich, Connecticut rely almost solely on continuously rising property taxes to fund their services -- Littleton citizens would go bonkers if they had to do that!)
    Littleton citizens also claim, as reported in the comp plan, that they care about sustainability. We need to do our part to use our land efficiently. For example, we need more density near our light rail stations and need to encourage more density along the corridors to take advantage of bus service. Some Littleton citizens assume they will grow old and automatically be blessed with the use of all of their limbs, not become sick or poor, and will always be able to drive a private auto. We need housing options with mobility options for people of all ages and abilities -- and, yes, incomes.
    It is my sincere hope that the ULUC process will move us forward with more housing options and toward a city that is truly more vibrant and economically viable.
