Do not take the heart of Eureka out and join it with Arcata. Eureka is connected to its downtown - and should continue to be through coherent political representation. I live near Carson Park and this version of the map bifurcates Eureka in a way that doesn't make sense - joining the actual downtown (business district) of Humboldt County's largest city with another town altogether. There are almost no similarities here - while I've heard that this makes sense because of a "high proportion of renters," that logic only holds if you ignore all the other dissimilarities. Arcata has a disproportionately higher population of students (who may or may not vote in Humboldt county). The problems facing Arcata have more to do with wealth inequality and lack of housing options for students and lack of affordable housing for the middle class, while Eureka struggles with long-term homelessness. In addition, Eureka has a really vibrant art scene that is connecting the city; it has many events that draw people downtown from around the city. Carving out Eureka's downtown and connecting it with Arcata is really insulting.

This makes more sense. Here, there is a coherence to Eureka (you can see the bulk of Eureka as one city). While I understand that the entirety of the city can't be in one district, here there is connection and a logic. You keep Eureka mostly represented as one. The outlying areas, which are commuter-oriented, are cut off... that makes more sense than cutting out the middle of the city.

Again - there is some coherence here. Eureka is mostly intact. I probably prefer the second option (Draft Plan B) but from my perspective, this at least retains the bulk of Eureka as one political unit. I think the question (for me, from my admittedly narrow point of view) is whether east Eureka is more Eureka, or south Eureka is more Eureka. I would say that south Eureka seems more connected.
