How well does the above draft map showing all proposed districts represent your community?
How well does “Draft Plan A, District A” represent your community?
What would you change about "Draft Plan A, District A"?
District A covers too many communities with disparate cultural and geographical identities. It would be incredibly challenging for any elected official to give all the communities within their district attention, because it can be a three hour drive between the northern parts of the proposed district and the southern parts. Shelter cove has VERY different needs and interests than unincorporated Eureka, and both are very different than the eastern edge of the County.
I would change everything about this district boundary. Perhaps a feasible option would be to have "A" represent the communities south of Humboldt Bay but north of the Avenue of the Giants. So Fortuna, Rio Dell, out to Dinsmore. And the move "B" to capture southern humboldt with all the communities on the Avenue, Shelter Cove, and Petrolia.
What would you keep about "Draft Plan A, District A"?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
How well does “Draft Plan A, District B” represent your community?
What would you change about "Draft Plan A, District B"?
Like I mentioned under "A", perhaps a feasible option would be to have "A" represent the communities south of Humboldt Bay but north of the Avenue of the Giants. So Fortuna, Rio Dell, out to Dinsmore. And the move "B" to capture southern humboldt with all the communities on the Avenue, Shelter Cove, and Petrolia.
What would you keep about "Draft Plan A, District B"?
It has a contiguous boundary that is fairly easy to identify and follow. It represents communities with similar identities.
How well does “Draft Plan A, District C” represent your community?
What would you change about "Draft Plan A, District C"?
EVERYTHING. The boundary is hard to understand, make sense of, and describe to others without looking at a map. Arcata and Eureka are not the same community. I would try to keep both cities as intact as possible and not split them between districts. I would modify this boundary to exclude Eureka but retain the Samoa peninsula, and then expand it to pick up more outlying areas surrounding Arcata. If anything, Arcata and Mckinleyville should be in the same district. They have more commonalities with McKinleyville residents who often work and shop in Arcata, and their fire district serves both communities. Adding in Willow Creek could makes sense too. Certainly more so than Eureka.
What would you keep about "Draft Plan A, District C"?
Arcata and the Samoa peninsula make sense together. Otherwise, nothing.
How well does “Draft Plan A, District D” represent your community?
What would you change about “Draft Plan A, District D”?
I would expand the boundary to include the parts of Old Town, the Clark District, and generally the north western parts of Eureka it currently excludes. And then to balance the population, exclude areas such as Indianola, Brainard, and other unincorporated areas that are more suburban-rural.What would you keep about “Draft Plan A, District D”?
Keep the parts of of Eureka that are within city limits and if possible, some of the unincorporated areas that have strong identity ties with Eureka, such as Myrtletown, Rosewood, and Bayview. How well does “Draft Plan A, District E” represent your community?
What would you change about “Draft Plan A, District E”?
I would remove the Arcata Bottoms and other communities directly adjacent to Arcata. Then add Willow Creek and Blue Lake.
What would you keep about “Draft Plan A, District E”?
It attempts to capture the northern communities of the County.
Any other thoughts on "Draft Plan A" you would like to share? Please specify if it is the full county or a specific district you are commenting on.
The Draft Plan as a whole makes zero sense to me a as Humboldt County resident who has worked or lived in almost all of the County. As a whole, it splits several communities of interest into different districts (Eureka, Arcata, Mckinleyville), covers too many geographically different areas, and make it hard for the average person to describe and understand. Please, please, please do not use this map to redrawn the district boundaries.
