Good Afternoon! Thank you for taking the time to read the comments related to, and review the request for a sidewalk/bike path installation on Jonesville Rd. I’m a very happy resident in my neighborhood and on the Island, since we moved here in 2020. The weather and access to outdoor activities is one of the main reasons that we moved down here. When we moved to the area, we envisioned our children, who are seven and nine, being able to ride their bikes as a mode of recreation and even transportation at the appropriate ages. Unfortunately, I will say that I have great concern for my safety at times when travelling on Jonesville Rd., and that I cringe every time that I take my children on a supervised bike ride, because it is unsafe for them even to travel .25 miles on their own to the Paddocks to play with friends. I frequently am running to access Spanish Wells paths, and I walk my dog daily with both activities occurring at various times in the day and night. As you know, there are several blind turns, there are no lights, and there are many wooded sections where driveways are hidden, to where pedestrians cannot see cars and vice versa. At night, I take the proper precautions of using a headlamp/flashlight, and wear reflective gear, but nearly every time a car is too close to me for comfort, and usually without slowing down. This often requires me to jump out of the way, sometimes into rocky, unkept and uneven ground. Not having access to a safe way to travel down Jonesville Rd., places children walking to and standing at bus stops, bikers, joggers, dog walkers, families travelling between homes, and individuals that have physical disabilities with far less reaction time than I have, at risk of being struck by motorists that both obey and do not obey the posted speed limits. With the increased traffic, including larger construction trucks, it is only a matter of time until one of the residents is struck. As has been mentioned in some of the other comments, I understand that prioritization tends to go to traffic patterns and the areas where the tourists populate. However, the residents that live in the Jonesville Rd. area are taxpaying, year-round citizens that should not feel unsafe travelling in their own neighborhood, or letting our children explore this beautiful island. I implore you to prioritize this project as a proactive measure, rather than a reactive measure because a tragedy has occurred. I thank you very much for affording me, and the other residents of the area, the opportunity to share our concern, and for your careful consideration of this matter.

Open Town Hall HHI has two participation channels:

  • The Registered Channel: Sign in before or just after you submit your comment. Either way, Community Feedback will show your comment on this website.

The Town of Hilton Head Island has contracted with Community Feedback to monitor comments shown on this website.

  • To prevent any single user from dominating the forum, the Town of Hilton Head Island restricts the number of comments any one user can post on selected topics. Registration helps Community Feedback enforce this restriction.
  • Users, staff and government leaders often want to know the neighborhood from which a comment is posted. Community Feedback uses registration to show the neighborhood next to each comment (not the address).
  • If a user posts a comment that does not meet the Town of Hilton Head Island guidelines for civility, Community Feedback uses the user's email address to invite the user to resolve the issue.

Community Feedback will get your contact information. The company is under contract with the Town of Hilton Head Island to hold it in strict confidence per their privacy policy.

Yes. Sign out, then set your privacy preference to be "No - just show it without my name to staff". You won't need to register.

While no authentication procedure can perfectly detect every fraudulent registration, Community Feedback is able to secure the registered channel against systematic fraud: cases where users submit enough statements with fraudulent registrations to sway the overall interpretation of the feedback.

Community Feedback is unable to secure the unregistered channel against systematic fraud, because unregistered users are anonymous.

Neither the registered nor the unregistered channel represent a certified voting system or ballot box - and that caveat is footnoted on every page of feedback. Instead, both are additional channels for feedback to government.

Users can participate on the registered channel (by signing in) or on the unregistered channel (by remaining anonymous). The Town of Hilton Head Island offers both channels in order to broaden participation and maximize decision makers' insights.

The registered channel enables users to assure decision makers that their feedback comes from a real person in a specific neighborhood. It also enables users to participate in a public discussion on the website, as well as manage their own comment after posting it.

The unregistered channel is for users who want to provide quick feedback without registering, and/or whose privacy concerns would prevent them from participating if required to register. Because many users with valuable insights will only share them anonymously, this channel gives decision makers the option to consider those insights in their deliberations.
