Because the Center will be an important civic site, it should be a beautiful space, visually attractive and interesting--a place people visit because it is beautiful, not only functional. I'm thinking of the L.A. train station, touted as "the place where Los Angeles begins." Of course, that is is a grander scale than we need, but the idea is one we can embrace.

Please think in terms of the beauty of the whole and not just in terms of a piece of public art. It's not enough to plop down a sculpture or throw up a mural. The whole design needs to say, "Welcome to this amazing town!" I would like to see the Center be a place people visit event if they aren't using the bus system. They visit it because it is a beautiful place. So yes, mosaics and yes, interactive act pieces, etc.
  • Would incorporating any of the previous ideas convince you to take transit more often?
    • Yes
  • If so, what?
The pleasure of being in a beautiful space.
  • Which, if any, designs below do you like?
    • Alternative A
  • Please explain what you like and dislike about the above options.
Alternative A fits with downtown aesthetic and blends into the built environment (rather than being a separate activity area). It makes public transportation attractive and easily accessible and it sends the message that public transportation is an integral part of city life. Studies show that it's not just the station that's important, but the things around it, so it's important to integrate the center with the town.
  • Is there anything else you would like to be considered in the design?

Design not only for safety and efficiency but for beauty. The Center will be a major civic site and ought to be a place where people want to congregate and a place that reinforces the character of Flagstaff as a place of great natural beauty and celebrates the community's cultural creativity.
