We need to pursue local renewable energy production as a community otherwise we are paying for imported energy in which we send our money out while buying imported energy. With our abundant solar and other renewable resources we need a city/community wide effort to increase our economic vitality and resiliency while at the same time promoting local business and greatly increasing environmental sustainability. We need to demonstrate leadership in economic, environmental, social, and health by implementing a very strong climate change response, let's not miss this opportunity to do well while doing good.
Based on your amount of concern for the above items, do you think the City Council’s 2019 sustainability goals are not stringent enough, about right or too stringent?
An 80% reduction in community-wide and municipal greenhouse gas emissions from 2016 levels by 2050, with an interim goal of a 30% reduction by 2030 - Not stringent enough
100% renewable electricity by 2050, with an interim goal of 50% renewable electricity by 2030 - About right
Please elaborate.
The only real barriers to achieving the highest level of renewable electricity goals is political and not economic or technical. Let's demonstrate the strength of our political will and enjoy the real economic and environmental benefits of doing so.
The Sustainability Plan Working Group holds equity as a core value of the plan process. What is your understanding of how Climate Change/Sustainability Planning and equity intersect?
The climate, health, and equity are inextricably linked and smart public policies will integrate disciplines, perspectives, and resources in addressing climate change and our community inequities. The drivers behind climate injustice and health disparities are fundamentally the same - social inequities, institutional power, and the need for broader systems changes in our health systems, transportation infrastructure, and the production and distribution of energy and this is where they intersect.
Are there any sectors or subsectors missing from this list that you think should be included in Durango’s Sustainability Plan?
Local purchasing preferences and policies, education and schools, impacts of tourism, inclusion, support, and collaboration with related non-profits that can strengthen and enhance the City's efforts..
Are there any sectors or subsectors on this list you don’t think need to be addressed in Durango’s Sustainability Plan?
No
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
The City has provided a lot of lip service in the past on this issue, but in the end the City's budget has never reflected the commitment of resources to achieve the goals that various City Council's have set in the past. There is no free lunch and therefore the City budget MUST reflect a serious commitment to allocate proper levels of resources to this goal. To do otherwise will result in failure and subsequently additional erosion of trust in local government.
