What other cities, downtowns or streets do you think Durango should consider for inspiration when developing design concepts for Downtown Main?
Walkable urban areas, with high density, mixed residential and commercial uses tend to lead to a more vibrant city and social environment. Parking and car friendly design need not be such a preoccupation. By encouraging people to walk and use bikes, most nearby neighborhoods can easily access south main without the use of cars. Dedicated bike lanes, bike parking, and infrastructure such as the proposed 12th street underpass, would encourage more people to use bicycles, scooters and other types of personal transportation. One can easily point to Amsterdam, London or Copenhagen as inspiration, but even the smallest town in Holland has significant bicycle infrastructure.
Are there any other comments you’d like to provide about your values for Downtown Main Avenue?
The basic backbone of Durango, the 25x100’ lot size was borrowed from the urban planning of eastern cities such as New York, which inherited it from the time when it was Nieu Amsterdam. This template gives the city its overall scale, look and feel. Development that adheres to this historic template should somehow be encouraged. Larger tracts consisting of multiple units, often exhibiting mindless iterations of the same bland melange of quasi historical architectural styles should be discouraged. The characteristic small lots, with corresponding smaller scale development and construction are inherently more visually, socially and commercially dynamic.
