Tobacco use, which remains the number one preventable cause of death and disease in California, causes nearly 40,000 deaths in California every year. In Santa Clara County, one in eight deaths annually is attributed to smoking-related illness or diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and the California Air Resources Board has classified secondhand smoke as a toxic air contaminant.

The City of Cupertino is seeking input on proposed policies to reduce youth access to tobacco products by prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products and reducing the availability of tobacco. Tobacco use, which remains the number one preventable cause of death and disease in California, causes nearly 40,000 deaths in California every year. In Santa Clara County, one in eight deaths annually is attributed to smoking-related illness or diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases. Nearly one in three Santa Clara County teens – 32 percent – report that they have used an e-cigarette at least once.

The City of Cupertino is collaborating with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District on a survey to better understand commute patterns in our region. The Air Quality District will use this data to inform their programs and funding of transportation projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Cupertino is gathering feedback on a neighborhood proposal to designate an area in Jollyman Park for use as an off-leash dog exercise area for a 10-month trial period. This proposal would allow dogs to be off-leash during selected times in the area designated in the map below.

The Commission is surveying the community to find out residents’ feelings on available internet speeds in their homes. The survey data will provide valuable information on the availability of high-speed internet in our community from the community’s perspective. Essentially, what the residents are actually receiving. This may illuminate areas that lack a reasonable service, or no service at all.
