In addition to green striping applications at intersections, some communities have painted the entirety of the bike lane green along busy roadways. The Town is considering this along Middlefield Road - what are your thoughts about this?

Are you familiar with other types of markings that you would like Atherton to consider? If so, what/where are they?

  • What do you LIKE about the green striping?

The green striping is a great reminder to drivers to watch out for cyclists - it catches your attention. If the road is just plain asphalt, you are much less likely to be vigilant about watching for cyclists who can be hard to see. Also, the green striping helps to remind drivers that it's illegal to go around another driver on the right hand side, using the bike lane. This happens ALL THE TIME on Valparaiso and more green striping on that street (on both the Atherton and Menlo Park sides) would help improve safety. The green striping that was recently added to Valparaiso has been quite helpful and I am so glad to have it done!

  • What do you DISLIKE about the green striping?

Nothing. I think it's been very helpful in some intersections where bike accidents have occurred.

  • Are there specific intersections where you think this treatment would be helpful? If yes, please specify intersections:
    • Valparaiso and Elena (especially Menlo Park side, but the other side for Sacred Heart bicyclists)
    • Valparaiso and Arbor (especially Atherton side. People block traffic to go to St. Raymond's and others drive in the bike lane.)
    • Valparaiso and Emilie (especially the Menlo Park side, but also because of Sacred Heart School on the Atherton side)
  • Are there specific intersections where you think a HIGHER LEVEL of striping would be helpful? If yes, please specify intersections:

No strong opinion either way. If bike traffic is significant along Middlefield, then full striping might work really well. Regardless, there should be striping at every intersection along Middlefield on both sides to remind drivers to look for cyclists.

I do wish there was a way to highlight to drivers that they shouldn't pass in the bike lane. Recent signs added along Valparaiso are helpful, but I worry that many drivers don't look at them. Maybe the signs should be bigger or a different color? Or can you stencil on the road something about "no passing" in the bike lane itself.
