Nixon Corridor Improvement Project
Through the Nixon Road Corridor Study (completed in 2017) community interest was expressed toward safety, non-motorized facility improvements, and maintaining efficient roadway operations (i.e. avoiding excessive user delays). Three options for the Nixon Corridor were analyzed during the study phase. Only one option, the roundabout corridor, addresses all of the primary concerns expressed by the community. This roundabout option would add roundabouts at various locations in the corridor, while improving non-motorized facilities, safety, and operations.
In May 2017, the City Council directed the Administrator to have staff design the corridor improvements. In fall 2017, a consultant was selected to perform the engineering design on the project. The project limits are between north of Huron Parkway roundabout to south of the M-14 overpass and excludes the recently constructed Dhu Varren roundabout. The project is in the initial design phase; tentative design completion anticipated in summer 2019. Construction for this corridor will be considered through the City's Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) update fall 2018. A potential timeframe for construction will be determined following the CIP process.
