Do your trips typically start or end in the Lower Town Area (in pre-pandemic times)?
Trip typically passes through a portion of the study area, but does not begin or end in the study area
How do you typically travel through the Lower Town area?
By walking
If you have traveled through the Lower Town study area by car, what issues have you experienced?
Frequent backups at Maiden Lane & Broadway, especially trying to turn left to get onto Pontiac Trail.
Also, the approach to the Broadway Bridges, especially northbound, invites fast driving. I have to actively remind myself to slow down because the intersection at Beakes/Broadway/Summit/Cary/Division is really complex!
If you have traveled through the Lower Town study area as a pedestrian, what issues have you experienced?
Long wait times to cross Broadway & Maiden Lane. Confusing pathing around the Broadway/Maiden Lane/Plymouth triangle (though I think the new sidewalk going in there will make this slightly less bad).
If you have traveled through the Lower Town study area by wheelchair, what issues have you experienced?
No response.
If you have traveled through the Lower Town study area as a bicyclist, what issues have you experienced?
Abrupt end of bike lane on Division is terrifying, as is the complex intersection at the south end of Bridges. From the Bridges to the Plymouth Road shared use path (which I take a lot) is confusing and feels dangerous and bicyclists have no proper place. I usually end up on the sidewalk because traffic is so bad and drivers are so aggressive. Long wait times to cross and confusing pathing in the Plymouth/Broadway/Maiden Lane triangle makes this worse.
If you have traveled through the Lower Town study area by public transit, what issues have you experienced?
Long waits stuck in traffic.
Which spots do you consider to have good conditions and which spots are problematic for you when traveling in the Lower Town area?
G - Good Conditions
P - Problematic areas
What ideas do you have to improve mobility in the Lower Town area?
Give up on trying to pump more cars through & make other modes more pleasant and quick so more people have better alternatives. Improve/expand bike facilities in gaps and fix the many confusing intersections/connections with realignments and better bike facilities; slow cars down by redesigning roads that currently often encourage speeding at 45mph+; lower wait times for crossing by people using pedestrian facilities; consider dedicated transit lanes, especially during rush hours, to make commute options for people opting to park & ride or even using the unfortunate huge 2 University parking decks on Maiden Lane/Wall better. Completely reconfigure the south end of the bridge so there is a clear pathway for cyclists. Close Cary St access to the bridge entirely. Take a lane or two from the bridges to make transit operations smoother and potentially a permanent bike lane if the shared use paths on the outsides of the Bridges cannot be expanded. Fill all the sidewalk gaps, especially in the walk shed of Northside/STEAM.
