Straws are consistently counted among the Top Ten items found on our beaches and water ways during national and international coastal clean up day. Once out in the environment straws pose a hazard to wildlife and as the plastic breaks apart into tiny fragments the plastics carry toxins back up the food chain as they are consumed by animals. Recycling plastic straws doesn't work because it is hard to turn a profit by recycling straws so they are often incinerated in the countries we send our recycles to. We don't need straws, and if we do there are reusable straws. Help Alameda become straw litter free by voting to adopt the proposed ordinance.

I do not own a business but I do work for an organization that supports businesses by bringing a free consultation service to food businesses to help them reduce overhead costs and waste by switching from disposable food ware items to reusable food ware items. I have seen first hand how businesses profit by making the switch. By requiring that straws be available upon request only and by enforcing the ordinance that disposable food ware be recyclable or compostable, you are helping to alleviate Alameda of it's street litter problem and encouraging businesses to look for economically beneficial alternatives to costly recyclable or compostable food ware items when their customers eat on site.
